Updated Titles

Just a quick update from me today. The title of my first novel and debut trilogy have changed a bit. You may have noticed the site change recently to reflect this. Previously The Forgotten Fae and the Dawn of the Forgotten Fae Trilogy, the title for book 1 is now Forgotten Children of Avalon, with book 2 titled Corruption of Avalon. I'm still working on adapting the trilogy title to this new style.

The reason behind the change was due to professional research. As someone educated in marketing, I started to delve into researching other books like mine that are already out there so that I could start thinking about what made my work different and exciting for readers. I was a little disheartened to learn that there were certain tropes, settings and structures associated with books about fairies. My story contained exactly none of these.

While my books will still revolve around the different types of fairies and mythological beings I've previously revealed, I decided not to include the word ‘fae’ on the cover of my book. I don’t want readers picking up my novel, attracted by the fairy stories they’ve read before and then being dissatisfied or feeling tricked when my novel doesn’t meet their expectations of fairy fiction.

For anyone out there writing in an unfamiliar genre or just beginning their writing journey, this is an example of why it is so important to do your research. This in no way means you shouldn’t write the story, or that you should conform to the established structure and expectations of your niche. It just means that you can make decisions that make the buyer’s journey easy, meet their expectations and avoid unintentionally making promises to readers that you can’t keep.

Broken promises are the easiest way to leave a bad taste in a reader’s mouth, if they pick up a book in a certain genre or subgenre, it’s because they enjoy the conventional structure and flow of those stories, meaning yours will likely disappoint or at the very least confuse them and bring them out of the story.
