The majority of writers out there have a dream, often the same dream, to see their work immortalised in print. As an unpublished writer, I know it’s my dream to see my name on the cover of a paperback in a bookstore. I want to share my work, creations, stories with all readers willing to give me a shot. But there’s another layer to Gaiman’s quote here for writers.
For many writers, that book, published or unpublished, is their dream. They’ve spent months, years, sometimes decades creating, daydreaming and tweaking their work. So, when you have a finished product? It’s as though you really are holding your dreams in your hands.
For readers, you become a part of a fictional world, life and character when you read a good novel. A good book, with the right characters, settings and plot, can make you wish you really inhabited that world. I know I myself have dreamed of attending Hogwarts (J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series) or joining the Shadow World (Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments) or even having lunch with Mare (Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen Series).
Books truly are dreams, one way or another, whether you’re a reader or a writer or both. They’re magic pieces of paper that transport us to another world, another life, another time, another reality.
